UK casino payouts, ranked by speed

LONDON: A new study of payout speeds at UK online casinos puts open banking transfers at the top of the table, with PayPal close behind and debit card refunds sitting hours further back.

The research team timed withdrawal requests at 40 casinos that hold a UK Gambling Commission licence, starting the clock when a player tapped withdraw and stopping it when the money arrived in their bank account. They ran the exercise over three months, covering quiet weekends and busy Friday nights, and logged 1,200 payouts.

Open banking finished first. You approve that payment inside your own banking app, and the money moves between banks without touching the card networks, which is why the median request cleared in 11 minutes. PayPal took 19 minutes. Debit card refunds came in at six hours. A standard bank transfer, the sort that needs a sort code and an account number, sat at 22 hours.

Deposits show none of that variation. A debit card deposit reaches your balance the moment the site approves it, and PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and open banking all clear the same way. Speed becomes a question only when the money travels the other direction.

The team's summary states: "The gap between the fastest and the slowest method has closed to less than a day, which would have looked impossible a decade ago."

PayPal sits second for reasons of its own. A withdrawal to a PayPal balance clears fast, but the money still has to leave the casino's merchant account, and some sites add a manual review step for a first payout to a new wallet.

The payout queue is the part you notice. A win that sits pending for two days stops feeling like a win, whatever the balance on screen says. The Gambling Commission tightened the rules on reversed withdrawals in 2020, which made it harder for a site to slip your payout back into your balance and label it a cancellation.

Inside the research

Method matters more than the headline. The team counted only withdrawals made through methods the operator supports for cash-outs, and left out anything delayed by extra document checks, since that wait comes from verification rather than the payment rail.

Paysafecard never made the list. You can fund an account with a prepaid voucher, but a voucher cannot receive money, so a withdrawal never starts that way.

Batch processing mattered as much as the method. Sites that release payouts once a day added up to ten hours to a request that the rail could have cleared in twenty minutes. Casinos that process on the hour kept their median down.

The team also logged sites that asked for extra ID checks mid-withdrawal. Those requests added a median of nine hours, and they hit first payouts hardest.

Account age shifted the numbers too. Newly registered players waited longer than returning ones at 14 of the 40 sites, which comes down to checks that run once per account.

The fastest withdrawal methods, ranked

The four qualifying methods, ranked by median time from request to cleared funds:

  1. Open banking transfers, including Trustly and similar bank-to-bank services: 11 minutes.
  2. PayPal: 19 minutes.
  3. Debit card refunds through Visa and Mastercard: six hours.
  4. Standard bank transfer: 22 hours.

Debit card refunds run slow for a plain reason. Card networks built their systems to move money from your account to a merchant, and the journey back passes through settlement batches that run overnight.

Two of the four methods need no card details at all, which suits anyone who would rather keep their banking separate from their betting.

The rules that sped payouts up

Payment rails carry part of the story. Regulators and campaigners pushed operators to stop sitting on cash, and those changes did most of the work.

The credit card ban in April 2020 moved UK players onto debit cards, e-wallets and bank transfers. That shift gave operators a commercial reason to speed up the cash-out side, because a slow payout had become the last thing between a player and a rival site.

Open banking rules forced the big UK banks to open their payment APIs to third parties, and casino processors plugged straight into them. That removed the overnight settlement step that card refunds still carry.

New Gambling Commission rules arrived at the end of 2023 and curbed the practice of tying a bonus to a marketing sign-up or a reversed withdrawal. Those rules formed one part of a wider reset, and the recent changes at UK casino sites reach from stake limits on online slots to the wording of terms.

New sites, faster rails

Established names rebuilt their payment stacks. Newer ones started with open banking on the day they took their first deposit, which shows up in faster medians.

Sites in the new wave of UK casinos treat payout speed as a headline feature, printing median times beside each payment method and processing seven days a week. Older operators quote a range in working days and leave it there.

You see the difference in smaller ways too: a support agent who replies in a minute, a cash-out button that sits on the game screen.

Before you deposit

A payout you cannot predict is a payout you cannot plan around. Five minutes on the payments page settles most of it.

A few operators, AquaWin Casino among them, publish median payout times next to each method, so you can compare before you hand over any money. Others bury the detail in a help article that lists processing windows in working days.

Check the licence before anything else. A UK Gambling Commission number sits in the footer of every legitimate site, and it tells you who to approach if a payout goes missing.

Most UK sites send withdrawals back the way the money came in. A PayPal deposit returns to PayPal, and a debit card deposit returns to that same card, so mixing methods on the way in leaves you waiting on a bank transfer you did not pick.

Identity checks sit in the path of a first withdrawal at every licensed site. Upload your documents when you register, because a pending verification request can add a day that the payment rail would never have cost you.

Fees stay rare on UK payouts, though a bank can charge for an incoming international transfer. Hold your account in sterling and you avoid a conversion cost on the way out.

A support chat can answer the rest. Ask two questions: which methods the site pays out to, and whether processing runs on the hour or once a day. Both answers change how long your money takes.

Setting your own limits

Fast payouts have a second edge. Money that returns to your account in minutes can go back in as a deposit before you have thought it through.

Deposit limits sit in your account settings, whether you set £10 a day or £100 a week, and they take effect as soon as you confirm them. A time-out of 24 hours or a week locks you out for the full term, and a GamStop registration blocks every UK-licensed site at once for at least six months.

Limits work better set in advance. Decide the number before a session starts, and the site will hold you to it even when you would rather it did not.

BeGambleAware runs free advice and a helpline on 0808 8020 133 for anyone who would rather talk to a person than read a settings menu.

The fastest and slowest payouts on the list end in the same place, a UK bank account. Operators that built their payments around open banking now clear winnings before a card refund has left the queue.
